Samuel I. Hayakawa
English faculty member from 1939-48, an internationally recognized semanticist and U.S. senator from California. During his IIT tenure, Hayakawa published his first book on the meaning of language, the best-selling Language in Action
. He served as president of San Francisco State College form 1968-73, and in 1976, was elected to the U.S. Senate at the age of 70.
