Residents are held financially responsible for all damages found in their room or apartment and common areas with the exception of items recorded on the Room Condition Form, which was completed upon move in.
After all residents have moved out of the room or apartment, it will be inspected by Residence and Greek Life staff. If damages are discovered, furniture items are missing or left behind, or any portion of your space is not properly cleaned, a charge will be assessed and split equally among occupants of the unit. Each member of the floor will be charged for common area damages in the lounges, hallways or bathrooms (unless an individual takes responsibility). Damage fees may include excessive trash.
If you are not responsible for damage, it is incumbent upon you, the resident, to discuss with your roommate(s) to decide who will accept responsibility. Taking responsibility for damages must be submitted in writing, and include signatures of all residents of the room or apartment. Submit responsibility of damages to Residence and Greek Life at housing@iit.edu.
Residents will receive an email by May 21, 2013 with a listing of any damages billing costs assessed to their student account. Residents will have until one (1) week from the date of the letter to appeal any damage fees. All damage fees and appeals are final.
A sample of damage billing costs are:
Late checkout $150 (daily)
Lounge furniture in room $25
Missing key $120
Items should not be left in the hallway at any time. Leaving items in the hallways is a violation of the City of Chicago Fire Code and the Residence Hall Handbook; and may result in fines or judicial sanctions.
