FERPA Release of Educational Records

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of students' education records. IIT may disclose educational records only if the student provides this prior consent, except in emergence situations and other specific circumstances.

When IIT receives emails, the identity of the actual sender cannot be verified. Therefore, consent must be granted by the student for the specified email address before IIT can email FERPA protected information.

This signed release will remain in effect while I am enrolled at IIT or until such time that I may revoke the release by providing written notification to the Office of the Registrar. By submitting this signed consent form, I hereby certify the information to be accurate and consent to the release of information as stated above.

I, the undersigned, give IIT permission to release the specified educational records* to the named recipient. Furthermore, if consent is being given for the release of such records by electronic or telephonic means, I understand that there is no guarantee that such disclosure of information can be fully secure, and I release IIT from and waive any and all liability against IIT for any release of student information that may violate FERPA or its regulations as a result of IIT’s good faith compliance with any email and/or telephonic communications arising from the permission granted herein.

*With certain exceptions, educational records are those records that are: (1) Directly related to a student; and (2) are maintained by an educational agency or institution or by a party acting for the agency or institution. See, 34 CFR 99.3.

Illinois Institute of Technology, in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, (“FERPA”) has designated the following items as directory information: student’s name, address, telephone number, email address; parents’ names, address, telephone number; major field of study, classification, level, enrollment status, anticipated degree date, participation in officially recognized activities, degree and awards received, and most recent previous educational institution attended by the student. Illinois Institute of Technology may disclose any of the above listed items without the student's prior written consent, unless the Office of the Registrar is notified in writing to the contrary. All other student academic information is considered confidential and will not be released, with certain exceptions, without the student's written permission.

To revoke access to any previously granted FERPA protected information, please email registrar@iit.edu from your insitiutionally assigned email account.
