  • The Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship an innovation hub that is home to the Institute of Design, media labs, collaboration spaces, emerging technologies, and maker spaces, and where the entrepreneurial mindset is instilled in our students through programming focused on startups, venture capital, and much more.
  • The Institute for Food Safety and Health is a world-renowned food science research institute focusing on food safety, food defense, and nutrition for stakeholders in government, industry, and academia.
  • Pritzker Institute of Biomedical Science and Engineering is an umbrella organization that enhances the biomedical science and engineering research activities at Illinois Tech.
  • Wanger Institute for Sustainable Energy Research is an umbrella organization that joins energy and sustainability research with educational activities across the colleges and institutes at Illinois Tech.

  • The cell phone, magnetic recording, tall building architecture, and barcode technology are just a few of the innovations associated with Illinois Tech faculty and alumni.
  • S. R. Crown Hall, home to Illinois Tech’s College of Architecture, is a National Historic Landmark—and is considered by many to be one of the iconic buildings designed by legendary architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.
  • In fall 2024 Illinois Tech opened more than 34,000 square feet of cutting-edge wet lab facilities at Chicago’s Fulton Labs innovation hub to expand its research and development presence and to drive innovation in biomedical and biological engineering. Illinois Tech is the first academic institution to join Fulton Labs, which is also home to Portal Innovations and the Chan Zuckerberg BioHub. 
  • In collaboration with Chicago Public Schools and City Colleges of Chicago, Illinois Tech launched, in March 2024, the Runway 606 initiative, which creates specific pathways into tech fields for CPS students while providing supportive mentorship and cutting the time it can take a student to earn a master’s degree by as much as two years. The innovative partnership allows students who earn their associates degrees in high school to apply those credits toward specific programs at Illinois Tech.
  • Illinois Tech’s Mies Campus is now an accredited arboretum: the Alphawood Arboretum at Illinois Institute of Technology. Mies Campus was the first accredited arboretum on Chicago’s South Side and just the second at a Chicago educational institution. 
  • The Bachelor of Architecture and Master of Architecture programs received Zero Energy Design Designation from the United States Department of Energy in September 2024. The university is now one of just 34 institutions around the globe and home to four of the 53 total programs to have received the designation, which is awarded to programs that “demonstrate a commitment to preparing students for a zero-carbon future by offering a building science education curriculum within their programs of study that showcases best practices in zero-energy design and requiring a zero-energy design practicum.”

Discover+

The Discover+ degree program allows undeclared incoming college students the opportunity to explore different majors of interest during their first two years at Illinois Tech—and then declaring a major by the second semester of their second year of study.

Tech+

Tech+ is a tech-driven, multidisciplinary program that allows students to combine two majors into a single, four-year undergraduate degree program that integrates human-centered education with relevant, tech-focused coursework to create meaningful pathways into careers.
