Lucia Millet de Ferrater, "Hirschhorn Museum Expansion, Washington, D.C." The design process seeks the best strategy to fit the new program (30,000 sq. ft.) in such a tight site, while working on a new promenade for the exhibition. As a result of a diagram + model process, a new object falls on the top of the concrete doughnut provoking a new circulation and exhibition strategy. 1 of 2.
Lucia Millet de Ferrater, "Hirschhorn Museum Expansion, Washington, D.C." Double story-high (1/8th doughnut) spaces are opened in the building so as to create a new spiral movement that culminates in the new contemporary exhibition space contained in the alien object. These new transition spaces, called “art lobbies,” will exhibit large art pieces, proposing a secondary exhibition that coexists with the general promenade, and will provide an excuse to open windows in the existing facades. 2 of 2.
