Lecture and Panel Discussion: "Marshall Field & Selfridge"

    Thursday, October 30, 2014

The new ITV and PBS television series "Mr. Selfridge" has popularized the story of London retail magnate Harry Gordon Selfridge.  However, so much happened in Chicago BEFORE Selfridge got to London, when "Mile-a-Minute Harry" met "Silent Marsh."  Historian Gayle Soucek, architecture expert James McKay, and writer Alfred Imhoff will engage the audience in a panel discussion from 5:30-7:30 pm on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington St., Chicago.

This event considers Selfridge's previous 25 years in Chicago at Chicago's Marshall Field and Company. Who--Field or Selfridge?--contributed what to the success and the evolution of Chicago's Marshall Field's? And what aspects of Marshall Field and Company inspired and informed London's Selfridge and Co.? How did these Chicagoans have a giant impact on the history of London? Beyond breaking new ground in retail, economic development, and land use, both Field and Selfridge also inspired social progress for women, giving them the freedom to shop and socialize without their husbands.  Moreover, they de-stratified economic classes in retail, providing high-quality merchandise at an affordable price.  Special consideration will be given to how this history informs commerce and economic development in the 21st Century.

This event is part of The Collaborative City, a program of the Illinois Humanities Council, in partnership with the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), with Field's Fans Chicago, and the Office of Community Affairs and Outreach Programs at Illinois Tech.

The event is free with required online registration.  Additional information may be found at Illinois Humanities Council website.
