Co-Terminal Bachelor of Science / CS Master's Degree Programs
The B.S./Master of Science in Computer Science and B.S./Master of Computer Science co-terminal degree programs exist to encourage outstanding undergraduate students to pursue a master’s degree. With proper planning, these programs can be completed in five years.
Admission: Undergraduate students with a GPA of 3.25 or above may apply to an existing co~terminal computer science degree program in their 4th semester or later. Transfer students may apply in their 6th semester. Graduate Admissions has a special application form for co-terminal programs. A GRE score is not required. Admission decisions are made by the computer science department graduate admission committee. Co-terminal degree students are assigned both an undergraduate and a graduate advisor from the respective academic units.
Academic Affairs: Undergraduate Academic Affairs will monitor the student’s progress in the undergraduate program. Graduate Academic Affairs will monitor the student's progress in the graduate program. As part of this, a Program of Study (equivalent to form G401) must be filed before a student completes 9 credits of courses applicable to the graduate program. Up to 9 credit hours of senior undergraduate electives can be shared with the graduate program of study.
Financial Aid: Students in co-terminal degree programs are classified as undergraduates, and undergraduate scholarships continue to apply. For details, see Graduate Admission's Frequently Asked Questions regarding co-terminal degrees.
Graduation: When the requirements of both degrees are completed, two diplomas are awarded simultaneously. Students in co-terminal programs are not allowed to receive diplomas sequentially.
Advantages: The co-terminal programs
- Relieve applicants from having to take the GRE.
- Require less time and fewer credit hours than a combination of separate bachelor's and master's degrees.
- Allow students to use their undergraduate financial aid toward a graduate degree.
- Provide chances for students to deepen their study of topics they find interesting.
- Offer opportunities for research and project work at the graduate level.
- Improve the preparation of students to work in business or government or to pursue a Ph.D.
Termination: Co-terminal degree students are required to maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher throughout their study at IIT. Students whose GPA drops below 3.0 will be dismissed from the graduate program of the co-terminal degree.
