IPRO 312 Designs a Document Management Process
Materials documenting the experiences of Puerto Ricans in Chicago will soon be accessible, thanks to IIT IPRO 312: Designing a Document Management Process for Nonprofit Organizations.
Margaret Power, professor of history, and John Dorr, head of reference services at Galvin Library, led IPRO 312 during the spring 2012 semester. Under the direction of Power and Dorr, seven undergraduate students designed a low-cost process for nonprofits to digitize printed materials and integrate them with digital materials in a single search-and-retrieval interface. For this project, IPRO 312 worked with the Puerto Rican Cultural Center in Chicago. The students designed a program using tags and categories allowing anyone to search the PRCC's website for digitally reformatted documents along with existing digital materials from the website. The students toured the Center early in the semester to inform their "3D directive" (History in 3D: Document, Digitize, and Distribute).
"We hope our design can be used as a model for nonprofit organizations with little time, few resources, and not much money," says Power.
Students in the spring IPRO were Dylan Binder (CS '12), Morgan Curran (BIOL '12), Shaza Khan (BME '12), Evan McCarty (CPE '12), Ankit Patel (ITM 4th year), Kbrom Tewoldu (ITM 4th year), and Abel Zeraziou (ITM 3rd year).
IPRO 312 will continue in fall 2012.
