    Congratulations to the Winners of the 1st Annual Lewis Prize for High School Journalism on Technology, Science, or Business

    The Allen C. Lewis Prize, named for one of the founders of Illinois Institute of Technology, is designed to encourage high school journalism students to think critically and write clearly for the general public about complex topics and issues in technology, science, or business.

    Entries featured stories that explore the human, cultural, or social dimensions of a development in technology, science, or business.

    Prizes were awarded to high school seniors and juniors.

    Senior Prizes

    1st Prize ($300): "Fallacious Philanthropy: How Communication Can Erode the Value of Generosity" by senior Hatty Liu of Bellevue High School in Bellevue, Washington. Faculty sponsor: Ben Poch of the English department.

    2nd Prize: ($200): "'Eavesdropping Evolves, Eyeballs Enhance Espionage: Advancements in Spy Technology Generate Security Paranoia" by senior Anita Evelyn Thomas of Lake Central High School in St. John, Indiana. Faculty sponsor: Carrie L. Wadycki of the English department.

    3rd Prize ($100): "Racial Bias in U.S. Healthcare: Then and Now" by senior Julie A. Martin of Oldenburg Academy in Oldenburg, Indiana. Faculty sponsor: Alice J. Stephens of the English department.

    Junior Prizes

    1st Prize ($300): "Critical Shortage of Safe Drinking Water: Is There a Solution?" by junior Kelleen Boehlke of South High School in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Faculty sponsor: Jennifer Scapellato of the Language Arts department.

    2nd Prize: ($200): "'Frankenfood' Creates Precarious Future" by junior Hannah Weaver of Whitefish High School in Whitefish, Montana. Faculty sponsor: Renae Tintzman of the Mathematics department.

    3rd Prize ($100): "The Fourth Estate: Developments in the American Newspaper Industry" by junior Isabel Patkowski of Hunter College High School in New York, New York. Faculty sponsor: Martha Curtis of the Social Studies department.

    The Lewis Department of Humanities is part of the College of Science and Letters at Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, IL. The department offers B.S. degrees in Humanities, in Journalism of Technology, Science, and Business, and in Professional and Technical Communication. It also offers M.S. degrees in Information Architecture and in Technical Communication and Information Design, as well as the PhD in Technical Communication.
