1st Annual John D. Root Award for History of Science and Technology Scholarship
The Humanities Department sponsored the first John D. Root Award for History of Science and Technology, in memory of a former professor of history and department chair.
The award went to two student entries in the Chicago History Fair, which recognizes scholarship by Chicago-area students in grades 6-12: "Shuttering Child Labor: The Life and World of Lewis Hine," by Julia Wang and Sam Petti of Stevenson High School; and "Gustavus Swift and the Meatpacking Industry," by Caroline Williams, Mary Pierce, and Megan Chan of Lincoln Park High School.
Checks to the winning students were presented by department chair Kathryn Riley at the final awards ceremony, held April 26 at the Chicago History Museum.
