Bachelor of Science in Social Science
At IIT, the Social Science disciplines include economics, anthropology, sociology, political science and some aspects of psychology. These disciplines each focus on a complementary set of methods, theories and knowledge that allow us to enlarge our understanding of social systems and behaviors. The major in social sciences allows students to explore and use “S” designated courses from all these fields to meet their major requirements for graduation. The degree provides students with a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary training in the sciences.
Nuanced understandings of social systems and behaviors are highly desired by many types of professionals such as lawyers, journalists, policy analysts, planners, scientists, business managers, consultant, politicians, and medical people.
There are six core courses and six electives required within the social sciences major, including a senior seminar ("capstone course") in which students will produce a research paper or other project that demonstrates their interests and skills to potential employers and/or graduate schools.
Social Science majors are required to complete 39 credits in the social sciences. Majors are also required to complete an approved course in statistics and a course in research methods. Additional courses may be required to prepare students for professional training and for entrance to fields such as law and medicine.
