Research
From 1962 to 1963 he was a Senior Research Engineer in the Department of Applied Physics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia, Bulgaria , responsible for the design of microwave components and subsystems associated with maser studies. In 1963 he joined in the founding the Institute of Electronics, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, where he was engaged in the research and development of microwave passive components and circuits, anisotropic waveguides and periodic structures.
In 1965 he became Head of the Department of Microwave Physics and Technique, where he directed extensive fundamental and applied research programs in electromagnetics, microwaves and millimeter waves. His professional interests include analytical and numerical methods for solution of boundary-value problems of electromagnetics, field problems of gyrotropic waveguiding geometries and ferrite control components. He developed an analytic technique based on confluent hypergeometric functions formalism for study of circular waveguides with gyromagnetic and gyroelectric media. Under his supervision a great number of different passive components, subsystems and ferrite devices for microwave and millimeter frequencies have been developed, tested and batch produced. His activities have been expanded to include design of low-loss waveguide components and instrumentation for microwave diagnostics of semiconductor materials and development of solid-plasma devices.
Dr. Ivanov is author and co-author of many research papers in the microwave field and contributed chapter on Azimuthally Magnetized Circular Ferrite Waveguides in J. Helszajn’s book Ferrite Phase Shifters and Control Devices. From 1972 to 1976 he was a member of the Editorial Board of Electronics Letters. In the European Microwave Conference series he served on the International Management Committee (1978-1983) as the representative of Danube countries. He has also served on the Technical Program Committee of the Conferences of this series several times and chaired sessions on the waveguide theory, passive components and circuits areas. He was Vice-President (1978-1980) and President (1980-1982) of the International Conference on Microwave Ferrites, organized by East European countries. Since 1983 he has been a member of the International Advisory Committee of the International Symposium on Recent Advances in Microwave Technology (ISRAMT).
In 1978-1980 he was invited guest of the Technical University of Munich, Germany; the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Switzerland; Helsinki University of Technology, Finland; University of Naples, Italy; University of Washington, Seattle, USA; Technical University of Braunschweig, Gerhard Mercator University Duisburg, Technische Hochschule Darmstadt, FernUniversitaet Gesamthochschule Hagen, Germany and Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, USA for the purpose of lecturing and scientific discussions.
Since 1989 Dr. Ivanov has been operating as an independent consultant in the areas of electromagnetics, microwave passive components/circuits and nonreciprocal devices. During 1991-2000 he was engaged in short term joint research on gyrotropic transmitting media and devices with Gerhard Mercator University, Duisburg and FernUniversitaet Hagen, Germany as visiting scientist. His proposal for research on gyrotropic waveguides was chosen by the Commission for Scientific Research of the European Union and given financial support for joint work with FernUniversitaet, Hagen, Germany as host Institution. Dr. Ivanov was Guest Editor of the Special Issue of IEE Proceedings, part H- Microwaves, Antennas andPropagation on Gyroelectric Waveguides and their Circuit Application, (vol.140, No. 3, June 1993) and was consultant to several Universities and industry. Since 2000 Dr. Ivanov is teaching Electrodynamics at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. He is multiple year honoree in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and is listed in 61 st Edition, 2007 of Marquis Encyclopedia Who’s Who in America. Dr. Ivanov is recipient of the Medal of Merit of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
