Unveiling the Nexus in Harnessing Structure Holes: The Guanxi Dynamics in Cross-Functional Teams

Abstract:

This research investigates the nuanced dynamics inherent in cross-functional teams, with a particular focus on the intricate web of relationships between formal and informal leaders. Leveraging an extensive multi-source data set from 2,881 cross functional teams in a leading Chinese high-technology firm over four years (2014-2017), this research sheds light on the nuanced interactions within these complex team structures. By exploiting a new network indicator, Guanxi Value, this study unveils the multi-layered social networks surrounding formal leaders, delineating core, peripheral, and outsider members. Our findings underscore the pivotal role of informal leaders and the strategic orchestration of interpersonal networks in harnessing the full potential of cross-functional collaboration for innovation and performance enhancement.
