Application Checklist

Applicants to programs in Armour College of Engineering, Center for Professional Development, and College of Science and Letters:

Your application will be reviewed for admission consideration once the Office of Graduate and Professional Enrollment has received and processed all of the items on the appropriate checklist below. Exceptions: Financial support documents and School Transfer Forms may be submitted after admission.

    Degree-seeking (Master's and Ph.D.) applicants must submit...
    • Completed application
If you encounter problems in accessing or submitting the online application, please notify us at inquiry.grad@iit.edu. Applying online will expedite the processing and review of your application. Paper applications are strongly discouraged but are available upon request.

    • Application fee
This $40 fee may be paid (a) by credit card or Paypal account when prompted in the online application process, (b) by credit card through the IIT Bursar's Office payment website (select "Application Fee-Graduate" from the drop-down list and send a copy of the payment confirmation email you receive to gradstu@iit.edu), or (c) by check or money order made payable to Illinois Institute of Technology and mailed to the Office of Graduate and Professional Enrollment. For the most expedient processing, we recommend option (a).

The fee is waived for applicants who have been enrolled at IIT in the past or who attend an IIT graduate open house event.

    • Official transcripts
We require complete transcripts from each university you have attended for any length of time (both undergraduate and graduate study).

Official transcripts sent directly to IIT by your previous institution(s) are preferred. Scanned or faxed documents cannot be accepted. However, a "student copy" of your transcripts from any U.S. institution can be accepted for the purpose of application review and admission decision. For non-U.S. institutions, we will accept photocopied documents mailed by the student if they are properly attested, bearing the original university seal/stamp and the original signature of a school official such as a dean or registrar on each page. In both cases, the student will be required to submit official, original documents prior to enrolling, if admitted.

Individual marksheets are required from all institutions that issue them (e.g., Indian universities). Consolidated transcripts from those institutions cannot be accepted.

    • Professional statement
Your professional statement should be written in essay format and should not exceed 1000 words. It should include discussion of your reasons for pursuing graduate study, your academic background, your research interests (if applicable), relevant professional experience or related accomplishments to date, and your career goals.

Your statement may be submitted (a) as part of the online application process, (b) as an email attachment sent to gradstu@iit.edu, or (c) as a paper copy mailed to the Office of Graduate and Professional Enrollment. For the most expedient processing, we recommend option (a). Please choose only one form of submission.

    • Letters of recommendation
Letters of recommendation should be submitted from individuals who are able to assess your academic and/or career achievements and potential. Recommenders may include professors or employers, but may not include family members or personal friends.

Master's degree applicants must submit two letters; Ph.D. applicants must submit three. Please do not submit more letters than are required for your application, as additional letters will be discarded without review by the admission committee.

Your recommenders may choose (a) to complete IIT's online Letter of Recommendation, available by invitation through your online application; (b) to fill out IIT's Letter of Recommendation form; or (c) to write an original letter. For the most expedient processing, we recommend option (a). Please choose only one form of submission.

      Option (a):
If you choose to invite recommenders through your online application, please note: Once you send an invitation, it cannot be deleted or changed. However, if you need to send an invitation to an additional recommender, or to re-send an invitation to a current recommender at a new email address, simply log in to your online application and use the invitation link. You can create a new invitation at any time.

      Options (b) or (c):
Completed Letter of Recommendation forms or original letters may be sent to IIT by email to gradstu@iit.edu, by fax to 312.567.3138, or by post to the Office of Graduate and Professional Enrollment. Again, please choose just one form of submission. Each letter must include your full name, applicant ID number, major, and term of entry; must bear the signature of the recommender; and must be dated no more than one year prior to the first day of classes in the semester to which you've applied. Letters sent by post must be original documents. Photocopies cannot be accepted.

Whether you submit your letters of recommendation online, by email, by fax, or by post, it may take up to two weeks from the time we receive them for your application status to update online. We are working hard to enter all credentials into our database as quickly as possible, and we appreciate your patience.

    • GRE scores (if required)
We require official GRE scores sent directly to IIT by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Please ask ETS to send your scores to institution code 1318; no department code is required.

    • TOEFL or IELTS scores (if required)
Applicants whose undergraduate degree was earned at an institution where the primary language of instruction is not English must prove proficiency in English by submitting Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores.

We require official TOEFL scores sent directly to IIT by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Please ask ETS to send your scores to institution code 1318; no department code is required. If you took the IELTS exam instead of the TOEFL, please mail your official IELTS score reports to the Office of Graduate and Professional Enrollment.

    • International students only: Financial support documents
IIT accepts proof of financial support in either of the following two formats:

      1) Bank official's signature and bank seal on IIT's Financial Support Form. Please read all instructions carefully to ensure that each required section of the form is complete.

      2) Original bank statement showing the required amount in your bank account. The statement must be on the bank's letterhead and bear the bank official's signature and stamp (bank seal). If someone else is sponsoring your education, you must additionally submit a notarized letter from your sponsor confirming their plans to pay for your education.

Photocopied, scanned, or faxed documents cannot be accepted.

Applicants may submit their financial support documents after being notified of admission; however, please note that an I-20 cannot be issued to an admitted student until valid documents have been received and approved by the Office of Graduate and Professional Enrollment. Immigration regulations stipulate that financial support documents must be no more than six months old at the time an I-20 is issued. If your financial support documents have expired at the time your admission decision is made, you will be asked to submit new documents.

    • International transfer students only: School Transfer Form
The School Transfer Form must be submitted by any international student currently studying on an F-1 visa who intends to transfer to IIT from another institution in the United States. It indicates the release of your I-20 by your current institution, permitting IIT to create a new I-20 for you. This form should be submitted only after you have been officially admitted to IIT.

Certificate and non-degree applicants must submit...
