William Schiemann

B.S. in Psychology, 1971; M.B.A., 1973
Chief Executive Officer, Metrus Group

Born in Chicago and raised in northwest suburban Park Ridge, William Schiemann knew of IIT's strong reputation and entered the school planning to pursue studies in electrical engineering, but he ultimately decided to earn a degree in psychology. He attributes his experience with IIT's College of Psychology, (then known as the Department of Psychology), as an opportunity to further develop a number of interests.

Schiemann went on to obtain an M.B.A. from IIT Stuart School of Business and a Ph.D. in industrial organizational psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. Early in his professional career, he served on the faculties of the University of Iowa and Georgia Institute of Technology, and held a management position at AT&T.

Schiemann began his consulting career at Opinion Research in 1981 as head of organizational research and survey practice. In 1988, he founded William Schiemann and Associates, now the Metrus Group, a research and consultancy practice that is directed at the use of measurement-based tools and techniques to help businesses maximize their potential.

Coauthor of Bullseye! Hitting Your Strategic Targets Through High-Impact Measurement and Reinventing Talent Management: How to Maximize Performance in the New Marketplace, Schiemann has also written articles for many publications, including the Journal of Applied Psychology and the Journal of Business Strategy.

"The quantitative grounding that I received while at IIT has enabled me to take this work in a unique direction," says Schiemann, who also credits the university for giving him the flexibility to try very different areas of focus. "This provided me with the foundation to undertake interesting and rewarding work in academia, industry, and consulting over my career."

Active in campus government and other groups as a student, Schiemann acknowledges that it was at IIT where he met his future wife, Valeria Hales Schiemann (CHEM '73), a principal consultant with the Metrus Group.
