IIT Stuart School of Business
The recipient of a full-tuition scholarship for both her academic and athletic achievements, Stephanie Salem has been scoring goal after goal both on and off the soccer field. She is one of a select group of 25 students and the only business student participating in IIT’s Kern Innovation and Entrepreneurship Academy, where she is helping engineering students channel their good ideas into business ventures such as startup companies. Salem is also on IIT’s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Academy Leadership Council and won top honors in two competitions—the 2009 Chicago Innovation Chase and the 2009 IEA Idea Challenge—for her contributions to product design and development in the marketplace.
Salem played soccer as a high school student in Minnesota and was recruited to IIT for her sports talents. “Playing collegiate soccer has been one of my most rewarding experiences at IIT,” she says. From a family of accountants, Salem observed how her father became successful in the business world as a result of hard work and integrity, and hopes to follow in his footsteps. She discovered that IIT Stuart School of Business was a great match for her on several levels.
“I really enjoy the diversity of students in my program. The chances I’ve had to work with students from all over the world has prepared me for global business,” explains Salem, who also gets to meet a variety of students in her role as residence advisor. “I have also had some great professors. I like that IIT is a small campus in a big city; this helps to create close relationships with classmates and faculty, and also provides for an immense amount of opportunities with Chicago as our backyard.”
