During John Rowe's recent address to the university, a question was raised as to where faculty can find opportunities to collaborate. This is one of those opportunities!
The Office of Research Support Services sponsors a Research Forum each semester. The purpose of the forum is to provide a networking opportunity for faculty to assist in the creation of interdisciplinary research teams.
The forum uses an "elevator speech" or "speed-dating" type format. Each presenter is give three slides and three minutes to outline their own research, discuss how their research can help others and the areas in which they need help.
All faculty members are welcome to attend and to participate, even if you have presented in the past. Each forum has a different crowd, so it will give you an opportunity to reach a new audience.
The forum is scheduled to coincide partly with IIT scheduled lunch break (12:40 - 1:50), and a light lunch is provided. Come on down, meet your colleagues, and enjoy lunch on us.
This is the presentation template. RSVP to Robert LaPointe lapointe@iit.edu to reserve your spot.
Date: Thursday, March 4, 2010
Time: 12pm to 2pm
Location: Hermann Hall, Armour Dining Room
The goal of the large proposal workshop to share experiences, offer suggestions and discuss opportunities for applying and managing large scale proposals. The scheduled speakers are:
- Patrick Corrigan (PSYC)
- Mohammad Shahidehpour (EECE)
- Vincent Turitto (BMED)
- Jamal Yagoobi (MMAE)
Please contact Robert Lapointe lapointe@iit.edu if you have any questions regarding the Large Proposal Workshop.
IIT Research Day is scheduled for Wednesday, April 14, 2010.
Research Day celebrates the various research activities that take place across campus, with a special focus on student research. The event begins with a student poster competition, with both undergraduate and graduate tracks, followed by the Sigma Xi Lecture and an awards ceremony.
Each multidiscipline unit may submit 3 posters for each discipline; single discipline units may submit 4 posters (e.g. BCPS may submit 9, 3 for biology, 3 for chemistry, and 3 for physics; ECE can submit 6, 3 for electrical engineering and 3 for computer engineering; AM and CS may submit 4 posters). Each department may decide how it selects the posters to submit to the competition. We recommend that each unit hold its own poster competition prior to IIT Day, but we recognize that some units hold their poster competitions after IIT Research Day. Faculty members are encouraged to contact their unit deans or chairs to determine how the unit will select nominees this year.
Please contact Robert Lapointe lapointe@iit.edu if you have any questions regarding IIT Research Day, or if you would like to volunteer as a poster competition judge (faculty members only).
A Corporate Research Postdoctoral Fellowship Program
RECENT Ph.D.s: A Corporate Research Postdoctoral Fellowship program, recently launched by ASEE and the National Science Foundation, offers 40 engineers who received a Ph.D. in the last three years the chance to conduct research in a corporate setting for a year. Host companies will pay up to $25,000 toward a stipend and provide a mentor. ASEE will put up $50,000, plus $6,500 for health benefits. Tom Peterson, NSF's assistant director for engineering, tells ASEE staff the program has the potential for high visibility. Aneesh Chopra, the government's chief technology officer, is "incredibly excited" about it, says Peterson, a former dean and still an ASEE member. It could be the "poster child for the innovation agenda." More information on the program can be found at https://aseensfip.asee.org/. Or you can contact Artis Hicks at a.hicks@asee.org or 202-331-3558.

Nanotechnology Undergraduate Education (NUE) in Engineering
Only one (1) proposal may be submitted by a US academic institution, College/Department of Engineering or College/Department of Engineering Technology as the lead institution with the following exception: A US academic institution may submit a second proposal as the lead institution, only if it is focused on the societal, ethical, economic and/or environmental issues relevant to nanotechnology. The lead PI must hold a faculty appointment within a College/Department of Engineering or College/Department of Engineering Technology within the submitting US academic institution.
IIT Internal Deadline: Friday, February 26, 2010
If you are interested in submitting a proposal, please send a two page abstract to osrp@iit.edu by the above internal deadline. If more than one proposal is submitted, a committee will be formed to select the internal winner.
Synopsis of Program:
This solicitation aims at introducing nanoscale science, engineering, and technology through a variety of interdisciplinary approaches into undergraduate engineering education. The focus of this year's competition is on nanoscale engineering education with relevance to devices and systems and/or on the societal, ethical, economic and/or environmental issues relevant to nanotechnology.
Related funding opportunities are posted on http://www.nsf.gov/nano. Research and education projects in nanoscale science and engineering will continue to be supported in the relevant NSF programs and divisions.
Example Project Characteristics:
NUE in Engineering emphasizes new approaches to undergraduate engineering education through interdisciplinary collaborations. These collaborations could lead to, but are not limited to:
- A freshman course introducing the basic phenomena and processes at the nanoscale, the unifying principle of matter at the nanoscale, connections to other disciplines, and application areas of societal relevance;
- New examples of undergraduate nanoscale engineering courses that are presented through the development of laboratory and demonstration experiments, manuals and other written materials, software, and web-based resources;
- Development and dissemination of new teaching modules for nanoscale engineering of relevance to engineering education that can be used in existing undergraduate courses;
- Incorporation of undergraduate research opportunities in nanoscale engineering into the curriculum at any level; and
- Development of courses or curricular enhancements related to nanoscale engineering and technology and environmental or social change.
