Overview
First-year students are those that are currently enrolled in high school, or have completed high school and have not attended a college or university outside of their high school experience. Sometimes, these students are also referred to as "freshmen," regardless of their class standing upon entering the university. In general, students who take college courses during high school but are considered students at their high school fall into this category.
Note: Domestic students are those that are U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents. This includes those U.S. nationals living overseas in military or diplomatic zones.
High School Requirements
IIT is looking for students of high academic caliber with strong community ties and a hard work ethic. We require all students to apply using either our online or paper applications, but greatly prefer online submissions. In the application, we evaluate not only your academic standing, but also your extracurricular, social, and community-based activities and leadership, as well as where you want to be in your career - whether that's a specific answer or not.
Students engaged in a college preparatory or general education curriculum generally make good candidates for IIT. Specifically, we recommend the following high school courses be completed:
- 4 years of English
- 4 years of Mathematics, including Pre-Calculus
- 3 years of Science, including 2 years of labs
- 2 years of Social Sciences
- Computer, technology, and other courses recommended, but not required
- 2 years of a foreign language
Application Requirements
- Application for Admission Submit your complete application by paper or online. IIT accepts the Common Application, the Universal Application, the Innovative Application, and IIT's Standard Application, and considers each equally. After you have written your essay, send it along with any supplemental information.
- Counselor/Teacher Evaluation Give these forms to a counselor and/or teacher who knows you well and can write about your strengths as a student.
- Secondary School Transcripts Ask your secondary school counselor to submit your official secondary school transcripts to the admission office.
- Test Scores Have official SAT I or ACT scores (with writing) sent to the admission office. IIT's SAT code is 1318; the ACT code is 1040.
- Financial Aid You will automatically be evaluated for merit-based scholarships upon admission to the university. If you are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and would like to apply for federal aid, please submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online after January 1 at fafsa.ed.gov. Homeschooled Applicants
While most of our applicants come from more traditional educational backgrounds, we do receive a handful of applications each year from students who have been home-schooled.
We evaluate homeschooled students no differently than other applicants, and make the same general recommendations for homeschoolers' pre-college academic curriculum as we do for students in more traditional high school settings. However, as with any applicant, we do welcome any supplemental materials that may help us to better review the application. Admission to IIT is competitive, and it is to the applicant's own benefit to provide us with the appropriate information to aid us in the fair and accurate evaluation of your application for admission.
Application Suggestions:- We invite letters of recommendation from a tutor or parent, but also encourage one or two additional letters from employers, coaches, clergy, homeschool associations or other community members.
- We will review SAT II and AP scores, if sent.
- Official transcripts of any classes you may have taken at local high schools or colleges or through summer programs.
- If we feel we do not have enough information with which to evaluate an applicant, we may ask for a more detailed description of the individual's homeschool curriculum, possibly in the form of course descriptions or syllabi.
Typically, our homeschooled applicants are prepared for IIT's rigor, but just have different curricular experiences; we look forward to hearing your individual educational story!
We encourage all applicants to visit campus, and to meet with an admission counselor when they do. During this meeting you may ask any questions you have about the application process, and, if desired, you can tell us more about your educational background.
