The Chicago Defender Charities, Inc. and Illinois Institute of Technology
Throughout our history at IIT, a very significant example of our collaboration with community based organizations has been with the leadership of the Chicago Defender Charities, Inc.
At the recommendation Leroy Kennedy, VP of Community Affairs at IIT, we have had a series of extended conversations with Colonel Scott regarding a series of initiatives which can build a significant pipeline of students from the city of Chicago to IIT beginning as early as the ninth grade. At this time we are exploring and developing a series of ideas including:
- An introduction to college/university life for recent elementary school graduates who will enter the 9th grade in Fall 2009
- An introduction to science, technology, engineering and mathematics for 10th and 11th grade students at two open houses on the IIT campus during the 2009 summer
- A workshop for high school seniors and their parents on designated Saturdays in Fall 2009
- An invitation to selected seniors who will enter college in Fall 2010 to IIT’s annual Fall IPRO Day in December which is a celebration of IIT student projects and innovation
At IIT, we have worked collectively with the leadership of the Chicago Defender Charities including Colonel Eugene F. Scott, Mr. Wright and Dr. L. Pettis Patton to build strong relationships and bridges between and among our institutions to support and advance the career aspirations of young people through the city of Chicago.
Outstanding students recommended by the senior leadership of the Chicago Defender Charities, Inc, who meet the admission requirements at IIT will find that they are fully supported in their undergraduate studies by a full range of academic services and a staff that has special responsibility to provide sound academic guidance.
In addition to the initiatives described above, we are launching a specific outreach program during the months of June and July 2009 to identify outstanding recent 2009 graduates of secondary schools who are well suited to the academic programs at IIT.
We have a specific interest in working with outstanding minority students who have successfully completed a rigorous college prep high school curriculum. The students we seek to enroll have demonstrated through their commitment to their academic studies through a desire to succeed in the study of science, mathematics, engineering and technology.
Students who apply to IIT for Fall 2009 will be provided with an expedited admission process, which will enable us to provide an admission and merit-scholarship decision within 5-7 business days of a completed application.
