Applied Mathematics
Overview
The four main areas of modern applied mathematics - and the main focus of IIT's Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics - are applied analysis, computational mathematics, discrete applied mathematics, and stochastic analysis. The department also offers a Master of Mathematical Finance degree jointly with the Stuart School of Business. Advanced undergraduate students are eligible to take courses in this program.
Additionally, IIT requires that students select a minor consisting of five related courses in an area outside of Applied Mathematics. With a minor in computer science or an engineering discipline, for example, students are well prepared to enter the job market in business or government, as well as go on to graduate school.
Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics (B.S.)
In addition to their regular course work, Applied Mathematics majors have the opportunity to participate in math-centered IPROs, a team-taught Introduction to the Professions course, and research activities with members of our faculty who are actively engaged in interdisciplinary sponsored research in modern applied mathematics.
A degree in Applied Mathematics from IIT is a real asset in today's job market. Students graduating with this degree will have a range of career options available to them. They work as top and middle level managers, executives and administrators, high school teachers, computer systems analysts, computer programmers, and engineers.
