Steven Barrett

Steven Barrett is a licensed professional engineer with over 10 years of design experience in the practice of fire protection, fire alarm, building code, and life safety. Mr. Barrett’s engineering career started at a fire protection consulting firm focusing on the nuclear power and Department of Energy Sectors. He also worked at a full-service architectural/ engineering design firm focusing on federal projects for the United States government. Since joining SmithGroup as a Senior Fire and Life Safety Engineer, Mr. Barret has worked on projects in multiple market sectors including health, higher education, science and technology, and workplace. In addition to his extensive engineering experience, Mr. Barrett has managed multiple projects of varying scales; mentored junior engineers; and inspected, surveyed, and commissioned the construction of fire protection/fire alarm/life safety systems. Because fire protection, fire alarm, building code, and life safety are related to all facets of construction, Mr. Barrett has collaborated with architectural, interior design, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural, audio/visual, security, and civil disciplines throughout his career. Mr. Barrett has represented SmithGroup at building department hearings for various cities throughout the United States. He has also served on the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Cut Score licensing committee and is a member of the Chicago Chapter Society of Fire Protection Engineers.
