Security threats can include an active shooter or an armed intruder which would result in the building going into lockdown. A lockdown is when no one is allowed in or out of the building other than Public Safety personnel. It is important to do these steps when you encounter these events.
Run
- If there is an escape path, attempt to evacuate
- Evacuate whether others agree to it or not.
- Only take your essentials with you (phone, key, wallet), leave other items behind
- Assist others in escaping, if possible
- Once in a safe space, call Public Safety
Hide
If you are unable to evacuate safely, find a place to hide.
- Lock and Barricade doors
- Turn off Lights
- Silence your cell phone
- Stay clear of windows
- Remain quiet
- Contact Public Safety, if possible
- Your hiding place should:
- Be out of sight
- Provide protection (consider behind or under a large object)
- Not restrict your movements
Fight
Only as a last resort and your life is in danger should you fight.
- Use objects as improvised weapons (e.g., chairs, tables, equipment)
- Commit to your actions
- Act with aggression
- Work with a group rather than on your own, if possible
- If the threat is incapacitated and you are safe, call Public Safety
