Join the Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering Department at 12 pm on Friday, April 28, 2017, for the 14th Annual Sidney A. Guralnick Excellence in Teaching and Scholarship Awards Luncheon and Lecture. During the event, William Baker, Structural and Civil Engineering Partner at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, will deliver his lecture "The Design of Structures."

Tickets for the luncheon are $15 for Illinois Tech students and $50 per person. A table for six guests can be sponsored for $300. Purchase tickets here by Monday, April 11, 2017. One professional development hour (PDH) certificate will be awarded to attendees.

Structural and Civil Engineering Partner, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) LLP

William F. Baker is a structural and civil engineering partner at SOM, where he has led the structural engineering practice for over 20 years. Since joining the firm in 1981, he has dedicated himself to extending the structural engineering profession through design, research, teaching, and professional activities. Baker is best known for developing the “buttressed core” structural system for the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest manmade structure. While widely regarded for his work on supertall buildings, Bill’s expertise also extends to long-span roof structures and specialty structures such as the Broadgate Exchange House in London and the Entrance Pavilion for General Motors’ Headquarters in Detroit.

Sidney Guralnick has taught in the Department of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology since 1958 and has inspired countless students. Throughout his 50+ years with the university, he has also served as coordinator of the structures group, dean of the graduate college, provost, executive vice president, and member of the Board of Trustees. In addition to his dedication to the university, he served as president of the Structural Association of Illinois. Guralnick is considered one of the leading experts on concrete materials, metal fatigue, plastic collapse, incremental collapse, and shakedown of framed structures in steel and reinforced concrete.
