Host
Department of Chemistry
Description
Panelists: Rong Wang, Professor of Chemistry; Nick Menhart, Associate Professor of Biology; Oscar Juarez, Assistant Professor of Biology
Moderator: M. Ishaque Khan, Professor of Chemistry
This year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Caltech Professor Frances H. Arnold and Professor George P. Smith of the University of Missouri and Sir Gregory P. Winter of the University of Cambridge, UK. Arnold was awarded this highest honor “for the directed evolution of enzymes” and Smith and Winter “for the phage display of peptides and antibodies.”
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced that these laureates “used the same principles of evolution—genetic change and selection—to develop proteins that solve mankind’s chemical problems.”
In this panel discussion, IIT Chemistry and Biology Professors will share their perspectives on the prize-winning work and discuss the present state and future relevance to the fields of chemistry and biology.
All are welcome.
