Armour College of Engineering’s Biomedical Engineering Department will host a seminar featuring Marc Breton, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Research in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia on April 17, 2015. The lecture topic will be Short-Term Glucose Concentration Prediction and Insulin Dosing: Applications to the Artificial Pancreas

Abstract

Most artificial pancreas control systems use mathematical models to predict future glucose concentrations and select optimal insulin infusion rates. The prediction accuracy and prediction horizon have significant effects on control decisions. The need for and means to predict blood glucose concentrations from 30 – 45 minutes ahead will be discussed. Different settings and possible inputs for enhancing prediction accuracy will be introduced. One of the core algorithms of the international AP study group will be described in detail. Clinical results will be reviewed, and the implementation of automated drug dosing systems on modern smartphones will be discussed.
