Armour College of Engineering's Chemical and Biological Engineering Department will welcome Dr. Mayank Kashyap, Lead Scientist and subject matter expert (SME) in particle technology and fluidization, in the Competency Center of Process Technology Group, at SABIC Technology and Innovation, to present his lecture, Bringing the World of Particle Technology into the Lives of Future Engineers and Scientists.

Abstract

Particle technology plays a critical role in various industries, including chemical, petrochemical, petroleum, pharmaceutical, metallurgy, alternative energy, agriculture, food, advanced material, environmental, etc. More than 80% of our gasoline, 70% of our polyolefins, and a plethora of other products are made using the fluidized bed reactor (FBR) technology. From gasification to drying, fluidized beds and circulating fluidized beds provide distinct advantages of uniform particle mixing, high heat transfer, and solids mobility. These features have resulted in several breakthrough technologies with better temperature control and the ability to move solids between reduction and oxidation environments. As a subject matter expert (SME) in particle technology and fluidization at Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC), the author proudly serves the particle technology community, both internally and externally, by introducing this field to students, young and experienced engineers and scientists, and professors, and by raising awareness about its importance and relevance to the modern Chemical Process Industry. The author will bring the world of particle technology into the lives of current and future engineers and scientists at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) through this seminar. In addition to providing the audience with an overview on particle technology, with focus on basic concepts and applications of fluidization, the author will also share an example from research initiatives in the Process Technology Group at SABIC pertaining to the field of gas-phase polymerization process. The featured demonstration unit will include a mini-circulating fluidized bed (CFB) prototype comprising a riser, standpipe, and cyclone, that has the ability to fluidize particles classified as Geldart groups A, B, C and D in various fluidization regimes, such as bubbling, turbulent, transport regimes, etc.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Mayank Kashyap is a Lead Scientist and subject matter expert (SME) in particle technology and fluidization, in the Competency Center of Process Technology Group, at SABIC. He leads fluidization research and plant support activities, and provides fundamental insight and technical guidance on the operation and design of fluidized bed reactors (FRBs), globally. Dr. Kashyap co-founded and chairs the Community of Practitioners (CoP) in particle technology and fluidization, and is the Chief Editor of CoP newsletter, within SABIC. Previously, as a Process Technology Fluidization Engineer in the Process R&D Group and technology owner of acrylonitrile (AN) fluidized bed reactors, at Ascend Performance Materials LLC (Ascend), he oversaw research activities and supported the development and improvement of fluidization and reactor technology. Dr. Kashyap earned the prestigious APEX Award in 2011 and 2012, and Special Recognition Award in 2012, for making noteworthy contributions to the AN business at Ascend.

Dr. Kashyap is an elected Executive Committee and Board Member of the AIChE Particle Technology Forum (PTF), concurrently serving as the Chair of AIChE PTF Student Workshop. The workshops he led at the AIChE Annual Student Conferences in 2014-2016 witnessed over 500 students and professors in attendance on each occasion. Dr. Kashyap currently co-chairs the AIChE PTF Fundamentals of Fluidization I session. He is also the Chair of Education in Particle Technology, and serves on the Advisory Board, for the 8th World Congress on Particle Technology (WCPT8). He was instrumental in establishing the AIChE PTF SABIC Young Professional Award given annually to an individual at international level for making significant contributions to the field of particle technology. Dr. Kashyap served on the elected Technical Committee (TC) at Particulate Solid Research Inc. (PSRI), Chicago, an international consortium of over thirty member companies, from 2014-2015, and represents SABIC Americas, Inc. at PSRI since 2014.

Dr. Kashyap received a doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Chemical Engineering, under the guidance of Distinguished Professor Dimitri Gidaspow, Emeritus, at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), Chicago, IL, in 2010. He was honored by the AIChE PTF with the prestigious and internationally recognized 2012 George Klinzing Best Ph.D. Award in Particle Technology. Dr. Kashyap has over a decade of strong theoretical, experimental, computational, and commercial research expertise in particle technology and fluidization. He has published seven first-author papers in international Journals, and co-authored a book with Professor Gidaspow. He recently co-authored an article with Professor Gidaspow on Evolution of Kinetic Theory in Granular Flow in the AIChE PTF Fall 2015 newsletter. Among over 15 external presentations he has delivered at various international conferences, Dr. Kashyap recently presented at the 2016 Fluidization XV Conference, 2015 AIChE Annual Meeting, 2015 Inaugural Barracuda Virtual Reactor® Users’ Conference, 2015 Polymer Reaction Engineering IX Conference, and 2014-2016 AIChE Annual Student Conference.
