Armour College of Engineering's Chemical and Biological Engineering Department will host a seminar featuring Assistant Professor, Donald Chmielewski. He will present his lecture, Economic Based Controller Design: From Predictive Controller Tuning to Smart Grid Applications.

Abstract

Since the inception of feedback, there has been a strong, but vague, relationship between control system performance and process economics. This presentation will highlight recent efforts to quantify such relationships and arrive at controller designs tailored not only to the dynamics of the plant but also to the specific economic situation. The first part of the talk focuses on the notion of Economic Linear Optimal Control (ELOC) as a computationally powerful tool to simultaneously optimize over controller parameters as well as its steady-state operating point, yielding a predictive controller that is tuned to exploit process economics within its constraint environment. The ELOC method will also be contrasted with the more popular approach of Economic Model Predictive Control (EMPC) and shown to overcome many of the shortcoming of EMPC.
