Members of the Illinois Tech community and friends are invited to attend the 2023 Darsh T. Wasan Lecture, which will be presented by President Emeritus of Illinois Tech and President of the National Academy of Engineering John L. Anderson. The lecture will take place on Thursday, November 16, in the Hermann Hall Ballroom beginning at 3 p.m., with a reception immediately following at 4 p.m. in the Hermann Hall Gallery Lounge.

With his many years of service in academia and the chemical engineering field, Anderson will present a lecture titled, “Engineering the Energy Transition to Net Zero Carbon.”

Complimentary parking will be available in lot A4 and in the B5 (Hermann Hall) parking lot beginning at 2 p.m. Lot B5 is west of Hermann Hall, and lot A4 is on State Street just north of McCormick Tribune Campus Center.

John Anderson

John L. Anderson became president of the National Academy of Engineering in July 2019. His professional career spanned 48 years in academia. He served as president of Illinois Institute of Technology, and as provost and executive vice president at Case Western Reserve University. Anderson has a 28-year tenure as dean of the College of Engineering and head of the chemical engineering department at Carnegie Mellon University. His first faculty appointment was in chemical engineering at Cornell University.
As a professor, he taught first-year undergraduates all the way through to Ph.D. students. He’s received honorary doctorates from Illinois Institute of Technology, University of Delaware, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Case Western Reserve University. Anderson was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1992 for his research on colloidal hydrodynamics and membrane transport. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He was a presidential appointment to the National Science Board from 2014–2020. Anderson received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, both in chemical engineering.

Darsh Wasan

Darsh T. Wasan led Illinois Tech’s international initiatives for 26 years, serving as the university’s chief ambassador. Wasan is a University Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Illinois Tech, and member of the United States National Academy of Engineering and the Indian National Academy of Engineering. Since joining the Illinois Tech faculty in 1964, he has made wide-ranging contributions to the university. In 1988 he secured a gift of a five-building campus from CPC International, Inc., and with an initial grant of $3.7 million from the United States Food and Drug Administration, he founded an innovative national center for research and education in food safety and technology—now called the Institute for Food Safety and Health. In 1997 he initiated the delivery of cutting-edge master’s programs to India via distance learning programs. He established centers in India, Europe, China, and Korea; forged relationships with universities around the world; and increased international enrollment from 15 percent to 50 percent of Illinois Tech’s total enrollment. In his 58 years at Illinois Tech, he also held nearly every leadership post, including department chair, twice interim dean of engineering, vice president for research and technology, provost, and senior vice president for academic affairs.
