Dynamic Evolution of Formal and Informal Leadership in Cross-Functional Teams

Abstract:

This study investigates the dynamic interplay between formal and informal leadership in cross-functional teams and its impact on creative performance. Utilizing a longitudinal dataset comprising 16,871 employee-project observations from 6,483 employees, 415 project teams, and 138 business divisions over four years, we examine patterns of leadership role transitions across formal, informal, and non-leadership positions. The analysis uncovers key mechanisms through which leadership configurations and role fluidity influence creativity and innovation. The findings offer both theoretical contributions to understanding leadership dynamics and practical guidance for fostering innovation in complex organizational settings.
