Description

Continuing with our Cybersecurity Research Seminars, the ECE Department has the pleasure to present Quan Zhou, Ph.D., senior resource associate, Robert W. Galvin Center for Electricity Innovation. Dr. Zhou will impart the knowledge he has cumulated in his research of "Communication-based Distributed Control in Microgrids."

ABSTRACT

Microgrids provide a promising solution for accommodating various distributed energy resources (DERs) and enhancing power system reliability and resilience. With the penetration of microgrids, the communication-based distributed control strategy is playing an increasingly important role in networked microgrid systems for coordinating a multitude of participating DERs, which demonstrates enhanced efficiency, scalability, reliability, and resilience. This presentation aims to provide a comprehensive review of communication-based distributed control strategies for the new generation of power system in the context of microgrids. I will elaborate on: 1) Essential background of microgrids and networked microgrids with practical projects; 2) Communication networks and various control objectives utilized in microgrids; 3) Classification of distributed control strategies and their characteristics; 4) Reliability of communication networks including data timeliness, data availability, and data accuracy; and 5) New challenges and opportunities brought by the advancements in communication and computation techniques as future perspectives.

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Quan Zhou received the B.S. and M.S. degrees from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai, China, in 2011 and 2016, respectively. He completed his Ph.D. degree in 2019 in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Illinois Institute of Technology. He is a visiting faculty in the Robert W. Galvin Center for Electricity Innovation at Illinois Institute of Technology. His current research interests include microgrid operation and control, cyber-physical systems, and smart cities.
