The Electrical and Computer Engineering department will host a seminar featuring Fei Shang, Ph.D., Sr. Power Electronics Engineer at Hatco Corporation, Milwaukee, WI. The seminar will be Challenges and Opportunities in Power Electronics: From Appliances to Electric Vehicles.

Abstract

Power electronics is a bridge. It has quickly become essential to connect modern technologies with traditional industries. Today, power electronics applications have emerged everywhere and significantly changed the daily lives of human beings. An induction heating system brings a faster and safer way of cooking. It allows the chefs to have a more accurate control of the temperature, greatly changing the cooking techniques. At the same time, vehicle electrification has brought some of the most significant changes to the traditional automotive market, which cannot be realized without power electronics. This talk will discuss industry experiences, explore job opportunities in this area, and understand power electronics's role.

Speaker’s Biography

Dr. Fei Shang has 10 years of industrial experience. He joined Beijing Accuenergy Technology Co., Ltd. Chinese company as an R&D engineer, and later, he was promoted to product development manager and led a group of engineers in developing smart power meters and motor protection units. He has developed more than 7 different series of products. All of them are profitable products and have been sold all over the world. He then joined the world-famous semiconductor company Infineon Technologies, where he studied and solved over 350 failure cases for IGBT applications.

Dr. Shang started his career in the US with FCA (Fiat-Chrysler) US, LLC, as a development engineer of DC/DC modules in the electrified powertrain group. He was responsible for developing the DC/DC module in many vehicle projects. Since 2017, he has joined Hatco Corporation as a senior power Electronics Engineer, responsible for developing the induction heating system for commercial cooking applications.
