Engineering Themes "Building Failure Because of Explosions"

Armour College of Engineering Adjunct Professor of Civil and Architectural Engineering, Anatol Longinow, will be giving a Security Engineering Themes Lecture on "Building Failure Because of Explosions".

Well-engineered building structures rarely fail unless there is a flaw in design, an unusual external load or error during construction. A mode of failure is explosion, that can happen because of an internal source (such as a gas leak followed by ignition) or external source (that can be malicious or due to natural disasters). In this seminar, building failure due to explosions is discussed in general. However, specifically, the damage done to the World Trade Center in 1993 is reviewed and presented. It is noted that the 1993 explosion was malicious - however, the structure survived and repaired successfully until the major attack and collapse on September 11, 2001.
