The Department of Food Science and Nutrition presents its fall 2024 seminar series featuring Yi Chen, a research biologist at the United States Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, who will present “Cronobacter and the Detection Methods.” This seminar will take place on Thursday, October 17, 2024, from 12:45–1:45 p.m. over Zoom.

Abstract

Cronobacter is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria that can cause infections and illnesses among neonatal infants. This seminar will cover topics on the biology, classification, epidemiology, characterization and detection methods of Cronobacter.

Bio

Yi Chen is a research microbiologist at the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN). He is the FDA subject matter expert for Listeria monocytogenes and Cronobacter. Chen led development and validation efforts on the detection, enumeration, and whole genome sequencing analysis of these two pathogens. He has provided scientific advice for various FDA assignments, outbreak investigations, and laboratory analyses. Chen received his Ph.D. in Food Science from the Department of Food Science at Pennsylvania State University in 2007. He currently serves as a member of FDA Microbial Method Validation Subcommittee of FDA, Expert Review Panel for AOAC International, ISO L. monocytogenes and Cronobacter working groups, and editorial board for Applied and Environmental Microbiology.
