Film Screening: Swimming Out Till the Sea Turns Blue
In collaboration with Asian Pop-Up Cinema, the Office of Community Affairs and Outreach Programs presents Swimming Out Till the Sea Turns Blue. Director Jia Zhang-Ke’s documentary focusing on Chinese society since 1949. Zhang-Ke interviews three prominent authors—Jia Pingwa, Yu Hua, and Liang Hong—who were born in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, respectively. Through each of their stories, the films highlights the dire circumstances that they faced in their rural villages and small towns, and the substantial political effort that addressed it, from social revolution of the 1950s through the unrest of the 1980s.
