Great Problems, Great Minds Seminar Series: Exploring the Impact of Perceived Travel Environment on E-scooter Riders’ Stress Level

Join the Department of Social Sciences for a Great Problems, Great Minds seminar series event featuring guest speaker Wenwen Zhang, assistant professor of public informatics at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University. Her research focuses on the social and policy impacts of emerging transportation technologies, such as automated vehicles, ride-hailing services, and micro-mobility, and leveraging data science and visualization techniques to address critical urban planning issues.

The seminar, titled “Exploring the Impact of Perceived Travel Environment on E-scooter Riders’ Stress Level,” will take place on Zoom on October 6 at 12:40 p.m.

E-scooters resulted in an estimated 70,000 emergency department visits and at least 41 fatalities between 2014 and 2019. However, limited understanding has been gained to identify factors that lead to unsafe and unpleasant travel experiences for users to inform more human-oriented road design. This presentation will discuss our preliminary data collection efforts in the field to demonstrate the feasibility and challenges of synchronizing the human perspective data collected using the latest biometrics sensors to address the aforementioned research questions.
