Illinois Tech RTC Lab Student Presentations

Time

-

You are invited to join us for presentations, demonstrations and poster sessions about the Real-Time Communications projects created by Illinois Institute of Technology students this semester.

The event takes place Thursday, April 26, 2018. It will be held on the Illinois Tech Main Campus, in Perlstein Hall, Room 108. The address is 3300 S Federal St Chicago, IL 60616 and the building is easily accessible from State and 33rd Streets. You can locate Perlstein Hall from this campus map, Illinois Tech Main Campus Map. Directions to the Illinois Tech Main campus can be found at Directions to Illinois Tech Main Campus. Here is a link to a map of Visitor Parking.

Schedule of Events:
There will be a poster session from 6:00 PM to 6:30 PM. Students will be at their posters to discuss their work with you. Snacks and soft drinks will be served. The student presentations will take place from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Your presence supports the students, who benefit from your questions and comments. We greatly appreciate your support and are sure that you will come away with new information, ideas and contacts.

Summary schedule:

  • 6:00 - 6:30 PM - Snacks and soft drinks: Students will discuss posters that describe key aspects of their work.
  • 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM - Student presentations and demonstrations.

Presentations Include

1. Real Time Communications Lab Projects and Activities: Director Carol Davids will provide an overview of the projects active in the lab this semester. These include the following.

2. Real Time Networks for Real Time Applications: Software Defined Networks and Network Function Virtualization are used by network service providers and carriers to increase the efficiency of their networks and improve customer experience. Will these automated networks be smart enough to prevent cutting off the media flows generated by real time applications and services whose media take a separate path from their signaling? This project studies the scenarios which will cause such failures and will use this data as input for the development of APIs that can be used by application developers to prevent the automated networks from making the wrong choices when carrying real time applications. Students will describe the virtualized test network they have created and their test results.

BlueTooth and Sensor Array (BOSSA) Platform: This multi-faceted on-going project provides the indoor location of a person who calls for Next Generation 911 services using a smart phone inside a tall building. It also provides periodic updates to the temperature and humidity readings of the sensors that are used to provide indoor location. The source of the indoor location is an array of BlueTooth Low Energy beacons. This semester the team will show and describe:

BOSSA Beacon/Sensor Array:

3. BlueTooth Gateway design and development: Gateways are used to provide administrative support for the array and also to transmit temperature and humidity at administratively controlled intervals. The design and operation of the new gateways will be provided.

4. New installation: This semester students installed beacons in a tall, residence hall building. They will describe the process and the results of experiments to determine the accuracy of our indoor location algorithm in this new environment.

BOSSA Database and Application Development:

5. Application development: Students have developed new applications that use the APIs available on the BOSSA platform to provide services to the first responder, the facilities manager and the caller. Mobile apps and web apps will be described.

6. Database and Backend Services: The applications make use of the database and backend servers which the student teams have significantly developed this semester. The team will summarize the changes that support the app developers.

We hope you will join us for this interesting and informative event, which is free and open to the public. We look forward to seeing you soon.
