ABSTRACT

HNTB led the preliminary engineering and final design of the new Jeremiah Morrow Bridge over the Little Miami River. The $88 million bridge is under construction and will replace 35-year-old, twin two-lane truss structures that had become structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. Design work included 3D FEM modeling using HNTB's in-house T187 program and LARSA, including time-dependent effects, preliminary analysis design of piers and foundations; analysis and design of the segmental framing system based on an assumed erection sequence, design and detailing of post-tensioned layout, typical segment, deviator, and anchor blocks. A sophisticated automation rating tool that uses the FEM analyses data output was developed for use by ODOT for future permit ratings.

BIO

Tony Shkurti, Ph.D., PE, SE is an HNTB Fellow and a licensed structural engineer with extensive experience in bridge design and serves as the Great Lakes Division Structural Lead at HNTB, Corp. and the Structural Task Lead and Engineer of Record for eight flyover ramps in a five-level congested interchanges designed with curved steel trapezoidal girders of the Marquette Interchange Project. He earned his undergraduate degree in Structural Engineering from the University of Tirana in Albania, Masters of Science from Wayne State University in Detroit and his Doctorate of Philosophy in Structural Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. He is also the President of Structural Engineers Association of Illinois.
