Armour College of Engineering's Mechanical, Materials & Aerospace Engineering Department will welcome Dr. Matthew Munson, Program Manager at the U.S. Army Research Office, to campus on Thursday, June 4th, to present his lecture, Army Research Office Fluid Dynamics Program.

Abstract

This informal talk will discuss the basic research areas of interest to the Army Research Office Fluid Dynamics program. It will also cover the mechanics of proposal submission and selection and the various funding mechanisms available to academic researchers.

Biography

Dr. Matthew Munson has recently taken over permanent management of the Army Research Office Fluid Dynamics program. Before this assignment, Dr. Munson was a research engineer at the Army Research Laboratory's Vehicle Technology Directorate at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. There, he was part of a team involved in setting up new facilities and capabilities for experimental fluid dynamics, mostly related to low-Reynolds number aerodynamics and flow control.

Dr. Munson received his Ph.D. in Aeronautics from the California Institute of Technology in 2012, working under the guidance of Dr. Morteza Gharib. His doctoral work focused on developing a real-time digital particle image velocimetry method for use as a feedback sensor in low-Reynolds number aerodynamic flow control. Dr. Munson received his B.S. in Aerospace Engineering and M.S. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he worked with Dr. David Williams.
