Description

More than 30 years ago Richard Feynman suggested the possibility of using quantum computers to simulate quantum physics. Now the technologies necessary to realize this vision are finally emerging. Particle physicists are already trying to apply quantum computing to gain a better understanding of particle collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, and to simulate the properties of black holes and wormholes. At Fermilab, we are also taking insights about superconducting materials, gained from building cutting edge accelerators, and using them to design better superconducting systems for quantum computers. Quantum technologies have applications beyond computing: at Fermilab we are pursuing three new fundamental physics experiments that exploit quantum entanglement and quantum 'squeezing' to achieve sensitivities otherwise unthinkable.
