Reactivity-property relationships in dynamic polymer networks

Department of ChemistryDescription
In polymer networks based on dynamic covalent bonds, changes in reactivity can be translated into macroscopic responses. My lab seeks to use synthetic chemistry to gain control over the temporal structure of polymer materials. We investigate how molecular mechanism and kinetics of exchange reactions quantitatively relate to the time-dependent mechanical properties of networks. We have designed crosslinks that allow us to tune the thermodynamics and kinetics of dynamic covalent bonds with light, including visible light. I will discuss the incorporation of these crosslinks into polymer networks, including stress-relaxing hydrogels and vitrimers.
