SEA Guest Lecture - Panama Canal Expansion: Third Set of Locks

The Structural Engineers Association (SEA) IIT Chapter will be hosting a guest lecture featuring Dr. Juan Quiroz, P.E., S.E., the Lead Structural Engineer for MWH's Energy & Industry Operations. His lecture, Panama Canal Expansion: Third Set of Locks, will cover the overall aspects of the project as well as some details on the dynamic analysis and design considerations for the lock structures.

This is a great opportunity to gain valuable information and feedback from a practicing engineer. Lunch will be provided. (Funded by SAF)

Abstract

Dr. Quiroz is a Lead Structural Engineer for MWH’s Energy & Industry Operations based in Chicago, USA. During his involvement in the Panama Canal Expansion project, he has been responsible for the major analysis and structural design components of the Third Set of Locks Project. For more than 15 years, he has been a project and design lead on numerous projects involving feasibility studies, analyses, designs, preparation of construction drawings, and review of contractor designs and submittals. These projects include hydroelectric power plants, RCC, Arch & CFRD dams, navigation locks, pumping stations, water and wastewater conveyance, penstocks, tunnels, and shafts in rock and common overburden. As well as building structures, bridges, footings, tanks, and most civil infrastructure.

Dr. Quiroz has Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Civil Engineering from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and a Ph.D. from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He is also an adjunct professor at IIT and a registered professional engineer in California.
