Armour College of Engineering Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Professor, Dr. Anatol Longinow, will discuss the importance of security and preparedness in the event of a national disaster with Federico A Nunez-Moreno, one of his former students.

Over the past several years Homeland Security has become an important topic. The U.S. Government is interested in having its citizens become aware as to how a municipality and individual citizens should be able to respond to various disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, terrorist attacks, etc.

A number of Universities now offer degree programs in “Homeland Security.” However, IIT has been offering courses on this same topic for several years both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Our programs were developed by our own faculty without direct assistance from FEMA/DHS. IIT has always used guest lecturers from FEMA/DHS as well as from other private and governmental security agencies and companies engaged in minimizing hazards.

Security is a developing field that has interesting and challenging jobs for civil/structural/architectural engineers. Work for CAEE students in the security field may include the design of building structural systems and security systems that resist explosions both accidental and deliberate. They might also design security systems for buildings to protect from intrusion and accidental effects such as explosions and fires. Finally, a CAEE student could find a job analyzing accidents due to explosions, fires, weather, impact from vehicles, mass violence, etc.

The purpose of this meeting is to acquaint the attendees of the importance of “security” in general, to briefly describe the content of the courses taught at IIT, and to demonstrate what our students who recently took our course have accomplished.

This event will earn you Engineering Themes credit in Security.

Food and Refreshments will be provided.
