What Does the Future of Nuclear Energy Look Like?
Join the Department of Social Sciences for this Great Problems, Great Minds seminar series event featuring guest speaker Jessica Lovering, Executive Director of the Good Energy Collective.
Ten years ago, the nuclear industry was looking toward a renaissance in the US, but now those dreams seem unachievable as new builds are delayed and over-budget. More urgently, several plants have shuttered prematurely in recent years and dozens more will in the next decade, just as they are most needed for emissions-free energy. On the other hand, over 60 companies in the US are working towards commercialization of innovative, advanced nuclear technologies. Can these new designs overcome the challenges of existing nuclear power? Nuclear energy can play a meaningful role in any serious plan for deep decarbonization, but only if the industry fundamentally changes how it operates.
