Fay Horton Sawyier Doctoral Fellowship in Philosophy

Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago

The Fay Horton Sawyier Doctoral Fellowship in Philosophy is a one-year residential fellowship, renewable for a second year, intended for graduate students at the dissertation stage of their studies interested in working with the Center for the Study of Ethics in the Professions and philosophy faculty at Illinois Institute of Technology.

We are seeking candidates interested in the fields of applied ethics, bioethics, research ethics, and ethics of emerging technologies and artificial intelligence. Candidates will be asked to teach two courses per spring and fall semester (lower- and upper-level humanities and philosophy courses), or substitute one course per semester for assisting in developing ethics modules for Illinois Tech courses or engaging in collaborative research with ethics center faculty, staff, and fellows.
Classes begin on August 18, 2025, and the fellow is expected to arrive on campus the week prior.  Salary is $45,000 per year plus benefits and relocation assistance. Additional summer teaching opportunities are possible. Funding for travel to professional conferences is available on a case-by-case basis.

Candidates must have completed all the requirements for the Ph.D. except for the dissertation, which they should plan to defend during the tenure of this fellowship. Candidates who have completed their dissertation and degree during the fellowship period are eligible to stay for the second year.

Please send or have sent a cover letter, curriculum vitae, writing sample, and three confidential letters of recommendation to laas@iit.edu. Applications must be received by the deadline of December 20, 2024, to receive consideration.
