Within the ELM program, General Learning Strategy (GLS) courses (180 and 182) are courses that are combined with sustained academic coaching following the ELM program practices.
- GLS 180 (1cr/hr) includes study and personal application of cognitive and meta-cognition strategies to improve academic performance, self-awareness, self-esteem, organization and communication.
- GLS 182 is academic coaching only.
Students who take GLS courses, on average, improve their academic performance by one letter grade going forward. This includes students of all GPA starting positions with a significant number of post-GLS students obtaining high 3 and 4.0 GPA’s. GLS students are supported by ELM trained UG peer-mentors and graduate TA academic coaches, in addition to the significant support services available in peer-tutoring for academic subjects provided via the Academic Resource Center (ARC).
Open coaching sessions are also offered to students who would like to work with an academic coach on a semi-regular or one-off basis. The sessions may involve working with a coach on general learning and metacognition strategies. If you are interested in open academic coaching, please fill the following form.
