Anand Will Present at Research Sessions and Workshops at Academy of Management Annual Meeting

Associate Professor of Management Smriti Anand will serve as a presenter and panelist at five sessions at the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management on August 9–13 in Boston. This is the premier international conference for students, academics, researchers, and professionals in the scholarly management and organization space, typically drawing more than 10,000 attendees.

Anand’s contributions at the conference will include presenting new research findings from two working papers, sharing successful teaching strategies and materials, and participating in discussions to shape future scholarly research in management.

She will be a panelist in a symposium titled LMX Incubator: Social Causes and Consequences of LMX in Groups (Relative, Differentiation, Comparison, Affect). Led by top scholars in the study of leader-member exchange (LMX), the session will be a forum to discuss promising areas of inquiry for future research in the area of emotion, or affect, in LMX.

In two paper sessions, Anand will present some of her current research exploring issues related to diversity in the workplace. At a session on Diverse Perspectives of Work and Family, Anand and co-author Arjun Mitra from the University of Illinois at Chicago will talk about their paper titled “Stigmatized Family Identities and I-Deals: An Integrative Approach,” which provides insights on how idiosyncratic work arrangements, or i-deals, can fulfill the unique needs of employees with stigmatized family identities.

At a session on New Perspectives on LGBT Workers, she will focus on “Boon or Bane? The Business Case for State Same-Sex Marriage Legislation,” a paper examining the relationship between legislation and firm performance and the boundary conditions impacting the relationship. Along with Mitra, Anand’s co-authors are Associate Professor of Finance Haizhi Wang at Stuart and Wei Du, assistant professor of finance at West Chester University. In the research they found that as states legalize same-sex marriage, firms headquartered in those states get a boost in financial performance. This causal relationship is stronger in tightly connected communities and masculine industries.

Anand will share her teaching expertise at two professional development workshops, one specifically related to human resources and the other more broadly addressing techniques for using humor to motivate and energize students and to build a positive relationship between teachers and students. The workshop sessions are:

• Teaching and Learning with Humor: A Tool for Successful Education

In both workshops, presenters will provide experiential exercises, pedagogies, and innovative course designs that other educators in management education can use in their classrooms.
