Architecture Students Win AIA Chicago Award for Project in Chile

The American Institute of Architects Chicago Chapter recognized students in the College of Architecture studio of Associate Professor Frank Flury with a 2018 AIA Small Project Honor Award. The project that earned the award, a small pavilion-like community center in the remote town of Antihuala, Chile, was designed and constructed by the group in the summer of 2016. 

The structure is built out of regional materials—the logging industry being of particular significance to the area—including a naturally durable charred pine siding. Building took place with input and assistance from members of the community, who advised on traditional regional methods of construction, including the use of oxen to raise and haul materials. 

In addition to receiving the Honor Award, the Antihuala Community Center was featured on the cover of the May/June 2018 issue of Chicago Architect magazine, the trade publication of the AIA Chicago Chapter. 

Frank Flury, who is also director of the Bachelor of Architecture Program, served as Architect of Record on the project. Flury was honored with the 2018 Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award.
