Chicago Artist Barbara Kasten Residency at Historic Crown Hall

Illinois Tech’s College of Architecture, the Mies van der Rohe Society, and Bortolami Gallery welcome Chicago-based artist Barbara Kasten for a month-long residency at S. R. Crown Hall, located on Illinois Tech’s Mies Campus.

Kasten will activate Mies van der Rohe’s iconic space with new sculptural constructions that will form the basis of a series of photographs that aim to dematerialize architectural space into abstraction. The work will remain on view through July 2018.

The project will culminate with a conversation between Barbara Kasten and Alex Klein, The Dorothy and Stephen R. Weber (CHE ’60) Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania, as they discuss Kasten’s prior works and the recent onsite project. The event will be held in S. R. Crown Hall on Sunday, July 22 at 2 p.m. A reception will follow.

Kasten is a visual artist noted for her photographs of assemblages that consist of plexiglass and architectonic props. She has recently exhibited with Sammlung Philara in Düsseldorf, Germany, and was featured in the Chicago edition of the PBS program “Art in the Twenty-First Century.”

Kasten is represented by Bortolami Gallery New York.
