Do the Humanities and Social Sciences Matter in Today’s Society?
A discussion of the role the humanities and social sciences can and should play in preparing Americans to be productive citizens and global leaders will take place on the Main Campus of Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 in Hermann Hall.
Hosted by John W. Rowe, Chairman Emeritus of Exelon Corporation, co-chairman of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences Commission on the Humanities & Social Sciences, IIT regent and former Chairman of the Board of Trustees, the discussion entitled “The Heart of the Matter” will explore how the humanities and social sciences:
- Provide the knowledge, skills and understanding U.S. citizens need to thrive in the 21st century;
- Help foster a society that is innovative, competitive and strong; and
- Equip the nation for leadership in an interconnected world.
“Knowledge of the humanities and social sciences is essential to our ability to adapt and thrive in a world that is constantly changing,” Rowe says. “For the U.S. to remain competitive, it needs leaders and citizens who have more than just technical skills. It needs men and women who have the cultural and philosophical perspectives to frame issues, think critically, and lead wisely.”
“The Heart of the Matter,” a follow-up to a commission report issued in June 2013, is co-sponsored by IIT’s Office of the President and the Lewis College of Human Sciences. RSVP by November 13 by contacting Lauren Shelby at 312.567.5030 or rsvpevents@iit.edu.
