Fall Break Added to IIT Main Campus Calendar

Date

Chicago, IL — February 14, 2003 —

The Main Campus Faculty Council at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) has approved a new fall break in the academic calendar year, beginning with the Fall 2003 semester.

In announcing the decision, IIT Vice President of Enrollment and Student Affairs, John Baworowsky said the new fall break will occur at midterm, giving students extra time to concentrate on their studies. The inclusion of the two-day holiday will necessitate an earlier start of the semester. Classes will now begin the third week of August.

"Fall breaks are commonplace at most colleges and universities," Baworowsky said. "This extra break for our Main Campus students is in addition to the two-day Thanksgiving holiday that falls near the end of the semester."

Main Campus students will receive the two-day vacation the Thursday and Friday of the eighth week of classes, to recharge and rejuvenate for the remainder of the semester. Student activities and organizations will also have a designated time to plan extended off-campus trips or events for students.

"Many students have told me they were hoping for a short break at the midpoint of the semester," said Doug Geiger, dean of students. "After eight weeks of classes and intense study, we believe this additional time off will give our students a chance to catch their breath and let off some steam."

The new start date for the Fall 2003 Semester will be Thursday, Aug. 21, 2003. The fall break is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, Oct. 16 and 17, 2003.
